Lesson 1. Orientation: What You'll Be Able to Do in 12 Weeks
Chapter 1. Hangul Mastery · Week 1 · Prerequisites: None (Start here!) · Est. time: ~30 min (review included)
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to…
- Understand the full 12-week roadmap
- See why Hangul can be read in 3 days
- Understand the learning contract of this course
- Write your own learning goal in one sentence
Main Lesson
1. You, 12 weeks from now
Here is the kind of sentence you will be saying by the end of this course:
저는 캐나다에서 왔어요. 한국어를 배우고 있어요. Jeoneun kaenadaeseo wasseoyo. Hangugeoreul baeugo isseoyo. "I'm from Canada. I'm learning Korean."
It's perfectly fine if you can't read a single letter right now. In 12 weeks you will read, write, and say sentences like this.
2. The 12-Week Roadmap
| Week | Content | You'll be able to… |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Hangul Mastery | read signs and menus |
| Weeks 2–3 | Survival Korean | order coffee, shop, find your way |
| Weeks 4–5 | Grammar Core I | build your own sentences |
| Weeks 6–7 | Grammar Core II | talk about past and future |
| Week 8 | Vocabulary Boost (Sino-Korean words) | multiply your vocabulary by 100+ words at a time |
| Week 9 | Listening | understand real-speed Korean |
| Weeks 10–11 | Grammar Expansion | express conditions, reasons, comparisons |
| Week 12 | Real Korean | casual speech, texting, a 3-minute chat |
Final goal: everyday survival conversation plus casual/spoken Korean — TOPIK level 1 complete, entering level 2.
3. "You can read Hangul in 3 days"
Hangul is not pictographic — it is an alphabet that draws sounds. And it's a small system:
- 10 basic vowels + ㅐ/ㅔ
- 14 basic consonants
- Just one combination rule: stacking blocks
That makes it easier to learn than the 26-letter English alphabet. You'll see this for yourself in Lessons 2–5.
4. The Learning Contract
Three promises of this course:
- Survival first — You'll learn phrases you can use today before grammar theory.
- Chunks first, rules later — For example, you'll memorize 주세요 (juseyo, "please give me") as a whole chunk in Week 2, and learn the grammar behind it in Lesson 25. This is by design, not cheating.
- Spiral review — Every chapter ends with a [Real-World] checkpoint that recycles what you learned.
Key Expressions & Vocabulary — First Taste (just the meaning for now!)
Today, just learn what these mean. By Lesson 8 you'll be able to read them yourself.
| Korean | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| 안녕하세요 | annyeonghaseyo [안녕하세요→안녕하세요] | Hello |
| 감사합니다 | gamsahamnida [감사함니다] | Thank you |
Practice
- Which week of the 12-week course are you most excited about, and why? (Answer in your own language.)
- Which phrase did we say you'll memorize as a chunk first, before learning the grammar behind it?
Mission
- Write your personal learning goal in one sentence (your own language is fine). E.g., "In 12 weeks, I'll arrange a dinner with my Korean friend — in Korean."
- Make a weekly study schedule — Plan for 5–6 lessons per week, 30 minutes a day (review included). Decide exactly when (day + time) you will study.
Coming Up Next
Lesson 2: Why is Hangul so easy to learn? Consonants draw your mouth; vowels draw sky, earth, and human.
Show Answer Key
- Open answer — the more specific your goal, the more likely you are to finish the course.
- 주세요 (juseyo, "please give me") — you'll use it as a whole chunk starting at the cafe in Week 2 (Lesson 14), and learn the grammar in Lesson 25 with -(으)세요.
